Sydney Cricket Ground

The Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing Under 12's played against Orange at half-time on the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday 29 July.

The 12 players that represented the Jets had a fantastic time and did the club proud with their efforts on the field. It was in fact our only win for the year and what better time to do it than in front of an AFL crowd.

Although the game was played on a rain soaked SCG , our players skills clearly outshone our opposition to enable the Jets to record a large victory.

The AFL have awarded a Certificate of Achievement to those players that participated. Congratulations to:

James Czarny
Daniel Ginnan
Shane Bartel
Laurence Kelson

Brad Armstrong
Caleb Bateman
Shane McGee
Damien Parrello

Gareth Reid
Lance Arundel
Michael Baker

Tumut Game Sunday September 9th

As a result of the previous game against Tumut being cancelled; not because of the weather but because we could only manage 5 players to turn up, which was disappointing as they had travelled up to 2 and a half hours yet some of us couldn't manage to travel 5 minutes, we therefore offered to play a makeup game.

This meant travelling to Tumut to show that the previous incident was just a hiccup and that the Jets were more committed than shown. In any case the game was re-scheduled to Gundagai which meant less travelling. So with some more vigour in getting a team together we made the hike on Sunday the 9th to where the dog sat on the tuckerbox.

The numbers of those intending to go looked promising and even Ben Rabjohns from Goulburn made the effort to turn up. A minor issue with the Tumut coach ringing early to say that the weather was pretty ordinary in Gundagai didn't dampen the spirits and the Jets all arrived ready to kick some Tumut butt (in a friendly sort of way).

We even had the rare distinction of actually supplying Tumut with a player or two so both sides had about 17 or 18 each. It was great to see the return of Greg to the team to finish off the season and although he had endured a lengthy break (no pun intended) still managed to slot straight in.

With a mixture of u/10's, a ring-in friend (another Ben) of the Streetfields and the Bateman girls it turned out to be quite a good game. The weather became a non-event and we enjoyed quite a sunny afternoon with all the parents who came along having an entertaining match to watch. With some judicious positional changes and Bateman family match-ups (Caleb sorting his sister Hannah out, while Daniel showed his intentions with a coat-hanger on Priscilla) it was an opportunity to let the kids enjoy the game and give the Tumut Roosters some much needed practice.

Chris Streetfield, Ben Rabjohns and young Andrew Daley had a productive outing by kicking a couple of majors each through the improvised goal sticks (we were playing the game on a local high school rugby ground so hitting the cross member must've meant a 7 pointer??). The highlight of the year was in the opening term when Daniel Ginnan playing for Tumut took an overhead mark and in doing so out marked Greg. It must've been due to the Swans jumper he had on. He still can't kick though - probably needs a couple more Swans jumpers on.

Noticeable games were from mister reliable Michael Baker, Daniel Bateman, Andrew Daley (all received the Maccas award from Tumut) and Bobby McGee who played, by far, his best game of the year with his endeavour in contests well rated.

Honourable mentions are also extended to the other u/10's who acquitted themselves well (Antony & Daniel, Tim, Brendon and Adam), Pigsy (Gareth), Alex, James, Shane M, Caleb, Lance, the Bateman girls and Ben the ring-in. At the end it was Jets first with daylight next and overall the foundation of establishing a regular turnout against Tumut was re-affirmed with hopefully two matches next season. Well done to all those attending - players and parents, you've done the club proud.

Paul.
