Introduction

This season summary page acts as an online Yearbook. While not everything in the Yearbook is displayed here in this page, there are ample links available to the missing components to recreate all of the Yearbook - in fact even more of the 2002 season.

This season saw the club increase its on-field presence with teams being fielded in the 8 (two teams), 9, 10, 11 and 13 year grades. The 13's recorded the first premiership points for the Jets in competition footy and moved us off the bottom of the ladder. Auskick numbers and junior development activity ensured our profile in the Gungahlin area improved which contributed greatly to numbers and we also welcomed an increase of players from Goulburn, obviously starved up there for a decent sport to play, who have now ensured their brand of desire and attitude is ingrained in the Jets development of tradition.

In regard to developing a tradition, we are also well placed compared to other clubs in the manner of conduct our kids display on the field and the social interaction of parents and their role and attitude towards the teams they are associated with.

As a club within the Gungahlin community we also made in-roads with the establishing of enduring sponsorship arrangements that promise to give the kids a strong foundation for their future development.

The efforts of the committee and some very effective and passionate supporters/volunteers have also ensured that the club has endured the uncertainty and shakiness of its birth as it moves into, possibly, its adolescence period.

From little things, big things grow
Please enjoy going back over the wonderful year we had as a club.

Presidents View

Welcome one and all to the Third Annual Gungahlin Jets Junior Australian Football Club Incorporated Presentation Day and Yearbook.

Well what a year it has been. The Club has grown from its humble beginning two years ago with 2 teams to an impressive 6 teams this year. We saw the first ever competition points earned for the Club (by the Under 13's) and our Auskick development program continued to grow. The club (with the assistance of the Canberra and NSW AFL development team) held clinics at most schools in the Gungahlin area with good participation recorded. We had teams play at the SCG and Manuka oval at the half time break of AFL matches as well as at our senior club matches. The Tumut trip to play the locals (and Cootamundra) was again a resounding success, but, undoubtedly the highlight of the year was to be able to see the players out there enjoying themselves week in week out and at all times representing the club in a manner we can all be proud of.

We are here today to acknowledge and reward the efforts of these players, but I will let the individual Coaches and Managers handle this component as part of the formal presentations and their report/wrap up of the year in this yearbook. It is also important to acknowledge all the other people who have helped to make this season the success it was.

Firstly to our major sponsors, The Sports Club Kaleen and the Gungahlin Marketplace who without their support we would not have been able to provide the required jumpers and equipment necessary to get six teams on the paddock. These major sponsors provide the club with more than just dollars. They provide us with avenues to promote the club to both increase our player numbers and the club's local profile, they provided us with the location to hold social functions and committee meetings, registration days and general promotion.

Next, our general sponsors Calvary Private Hospital, Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing, Denman Cellars and Magnet Mart who not only provided funding but also products and facilities use that enabled the club to raise further funds (that were used to buy all of the BBQ equipment), hold different types of training days, provide us with raffle and trivia night prizes and generally supported us in so many ways.

So too, our special support sponsors McDonald's Dickson and BB's Coffee & Bake Westfield Belconnen, for our game day awards to which all the players look forward to at the end of each match, to Peter Jensen at PGK Sports for his support and reduced pricing in kitting out the Club, and of course our appreciation must go out again to Aussie Print Civic (Terry and Evelyn Greaves) for helping to get this Yearbook printed. They were well assisted by Carolyn Roebuck and Paul Priestly in the gathering and coordinating of items for the book.

The Club wishes to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support of the Junior Jets and we ask that all of our members support those businesses that support us.

I would like to acknowledge our Club Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Managers, Umpires, game day assistants and officials who have given up many weekends and other time to ensure the players are shown the right way to do things both on and off the ground. Without all of your help the players would not have a game to play or have the opportunity to learn the skills required to improve and develop. All of these roles have been filled by dedicated hard working folks who I am sure enjoyed their involvement during the year. Congratulations and thankyou for a job well done.

I would also like to say a special thanks to John Bink and all of his Auskick helpers who ran what can only be termed an outstandingly successful program - all year I have heard nothing but praise from the parents for the great job done and the enjoyment all have got out of it. Again thanks to all who have contributed to make this the success it has been.

To the Executive and Committee, who would of thought how far we would travel and what we could achieve this year. This group of people have given vast amounts of time, (often in multiple roles), to the Club and I sincerely thank each and every one for their valuable contributions. Whilst we may not always agree on things, ultimately everybody had the good of the club at heart. We may get a bit fired up from time to time but passion has always been a big part of football. Nobody can say that it has not been a most interesting adventure and I think we all learnt plenty along the way. I think that all of you should be proud of what has been able to be achieved this year through your hard work.

Finally to all of the parents out there. I hope you and your child(ren) have found the year fulfilling. The rainy days, the travel (especially for our Goulburn Connection), the training, the sheer enjoyment of seeing your child get a kick or handball. It has been a most wonderful year on the whole and we hope to see you all back next year to do it all again.

Please take some time to read through and enjoy the yearbook.

I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM in December where some major news and decisions will be finalised with a view to our continued growth and success into the future.

Play for Fun and Play Fair and I hope we will all be meeting back again next year.

Bruce Chalker
President
GJJAFC

Junior Development Officer

My work as the Jets JDO can be summarised in four broad areas:

  • advertising and promoting the Jets Club in Gungahlin Schools;
  • conducting training/development clinics in Gungahlin schools;
  • Auskick ; and
  • Assisting/encouraging Gungahlin schools' participation in AFL competitions.

Advertising and Promoting the Jets Club in Gungahlin Schools

Through personal contact with school sports teachers and office staff, I prepared and delivered information for distribution in school newsletters at appropriate times throughout the year. These included advertising the Jets registration days early in the school year and Club Auskick activities throughout the year. Feedback indicates the Club has benefited from these forms of promotion. All Gungahlin schools have supported the Club in this way and their assistance has been very much appreciated.

Conducting Training/Development Clinics in Gungahlin Schools

This is the major focus of my activities. In general, clinics are organised in three 45 minute sessions for each class (one each week for three weeks). This enables teaching basic AFL skills in the first session, practicing/developing these skills in the second session through drills and games, and (generally) playing an AFL game under modified rules in the third session. Emphasis is placed on the fun, heath and fitness aspects of sport in general and AFL in particular. The clinics have been very well received by the school staff and by the students.

So far in 2002 clinics have been conducted for all students in the following schools:

  • Hall Primary (March)
  • Ngunnawal Primary (March/April)
  • Gold Creek Junior School (June - September)

Promotional material about the Jets Club has been handed out to each of the approximately 900 students who have participated in these clinics.

For the remainder of 2002, it is expected that clinics will be organised for all students at Palmerston Primary and, at the request of Ngunnawal Primary, follow-up sessions are planned with their older students with a view to their participation in the James Hird Cup schools competition in 2003.

Other Gungahlin schools have not taken up the offer of AFL clinics in 2002 but will be contacted again in 2003.

Auskick

This national AFL skills development program is conducted in the Gungahlin area in two forms:

  • The Jets Club conducts Auskick sessions on Sunday mornings over school terms 2 and 3. These are very ably organised by John Bink and this year I have been privileged to assist him and to learn new drills and techniques which I have been able to apply in the school clinics.
  • The AFL Canberra Development Team organises and runs after school Auskick Programs in conjunction with primary schools. There are plans for these to be conducted at Palmerston and Gold Creek schools over terms 3 and 4 and I will assist the AFL development team in these activities.

Assisting/Encouraging Gungahlin Schools' Participation in AFL Competitions

The main focus of these activities is the James Hird Cup competition which is conducted on a regional basis early in the school year with regional winners going on to participate in the ACT finals at Manuka Oval. The competition is for year 5/6 students playing under 9 a side modified rules. Clinics in the early part of the year concentrated on the older age groups with a view to encouraging participation in this competition (as well as attempting to bolster the Club's registrations in these age groups).

The Gungahlin Region competition was conducted in March. A total of nine teams entered with multiple teams from Nicholls (Holy Spirit/Gold Creek combined), Palmerston, St Monica's (Evatt) and Maribyrnong (Kaleen). A Nicholls team won the day beating Maribyrnong in the finals. These teams competed with moderate success in the ACT finals at Manuka. I was invited by the Nicholls team to assist in their preparations and enjoyed the experience of coaching them.

Conclusion

The two years I have been the Jets Junior Development Officer have been very enjoyable and rewarding for me.

Of course, I have not carried out these functions alone. In 2002, I have enjoyed the support of the whole Jets Junior Committee and, in particular, Bruce Chalker who has assisted in the drafting and printing of the Jets promotional material distributed to all students participating in clinics.

I am also grateful for the Club's funding my participation in the AFL level 1 coaching course early this year.

The AFL Canberra Junior Development Team also provides significant support in the provision of the necessary equipment as well as paid support staff. Special thanks go to Priscilla Bateman, the AFL Canberra development officer for Gungahlin/Belconnen who has been a tireless supporter of the Jets' activities through her organisational assistance and participation in the program of clinics conducted in the Gungahlin schools.

The Ainslie JDO, Peter McGrath, has also been a source of support and assistance in the school activities and I have been kept informed of and invited to participate in activities conducted by the Ainslie Club in the Gungahlin area.

All in all, I believe the junior development activities in 2002 have been successful and have played a role in the ongoing promotion and development of the Jets Junior Club. I look forward to the opportunity to expand and improve on these activities in the future.

A Message from the Senior Club

The Jets Seniors started the 2002 off-season with a very strong player list and an extensive pre-season effort, but were let down with too many inconsistent performances in the first part of the season. Both senior teams finished 5th at the end of the home and away season, narrowly missing out on a finals birth. The first division result was particularly disappointing, winning eight of the last ten games, and missing out on the finals by percentage only.

Another disappointing part of season's end is the retirement of some 10 senior players. Out of these retirements the most missed will be Marc Housley. Marc has been the Jets Senior Coach for the past 4 seasons, is a club best and fairest winner, two time winner of the clubs leading goal scorer, holder of the club record for most goals scored in a game (an amazing 17 goals) and has represented the club twice in the ACT Canberra District Representative Side. Marc's and the other retiring players wealth of experience will be sorely missed and very hard to replace.

Despite the disappointing results on the field the Senior Jets did have success off the field. The club increased it level of sponsorship and held several very successful social functions throughout the season. The Senior Committee during the off-season will be looking at ways to put a more professional face on the club and market the club to a wider audience. These measures combined with the move out to Amaroo Oval in 2003 will put the club in a great position to move ahead.

Another success during the season was the continued strong relationship between the Junior and Senior Jets. Through activities such as the joint Christmas Party and having the juniors participate in senior training sessions is a great way to promote a larger club atmosphere. At the recent 'Jets Past Player's and Officials Day' at Jamison Oval the juniors game helped produce a great atmosphere for the day, and proved how well the juniors and seniors can work together. I hope that a great day was had by all and look forward to seeing more of the same next season.

I would also like to thank the Junior Jets, in particular Paul Priestly, for the efforts put into the development of the Jets web site. The site had well over 1500 hits throughout the season and provided a great view of the Senior and Junior clubs. I would also like to thank Cyberone Internet (www.cyberone.com.au) for their continual and generous sponsorship of our website.

In closing I would like to wish the Junior Jets all the best for 2003 and hope that the club reaches its goals both on and off the field.

Go the Jets!

A Message from the Gungahlin Market Place

In a community as unique as Gungahlin, it is important to support one another. When the Gungahlin Jets approached Gungahlin Marketplace in 2000 to help start up a junior AFL club in the area by becoming a major sponsor, it was the perfect opportunity to give back to a community that has supported the Marketplace since it opened in 1998.

Sponsoring the Jets highlights Gungahlin Marketplace's aspiration to be actively involved in the development of this expanding area. It's a relationship that not only supported the start up of the club, but also continues to nurture the great community spirit that seems to exist in Gungahlin.

Gungahlin Marketplace is proud of the way the Gungahlin Junior Jets have grown and the way they provide a great outlet for young kids in the area. Let's hope they continue to make a name for themselves in local AFL, and keep the opposition on their toes!

GO THE JUNIOR JETS!!

Vice President Football

Our 3rd year gone! And growing strong!

This year was a great learning curve for both the club and myself. After combining the Under 9 teams early in the season I thought it appropriate to step aside as a coach to put more of an effort into my role as V.P.Football and enjoyed every minute of it.

I have been involved with the club for three years and have watched the players develop though the grades, also witnessing the continuous efforts of parents helping to share the workload, giving all the opportunity to become involved.

This year taking on the role as President, Bruce Chalker was married to the club (not his wife! Hahaha!). He represented the club in all aspects and put his heart and soul into every thing he did with tremendous results. A job well done.

Graham Bonnett did an incredible job this year in his position as Junior Development Officer, working with the Auskick program and within the surrounding schools to promote the game of AFL. His persistence paid off and the club gained many registrations from his tireless efforts. Great work Graham!

Throughout the year I witnessed all age groups perform during the season, at training and on game days. I was overwhelmed with the skills all players developed, the respect they showed for their coaches and the way they conducted themselves on and off the field. This only stems from the efforts that the coaches put into their teams during the season. Congratulations to all the coaches on their performances. Well done all!

We are all a one big team and to see players that have been with the club since it began, befriend the new kids on the block and guide them through the season was very satisfying. Well done to all the players and I hope to see you playing with the Jets for years to come.

Mark Walker

Auskick

G'day All,

Auskick this year was great fun with 48 kids being registered and extra brothers, sisters and friends joining in along the way.

The Auskick was run on a Sunday morning starting at 9.30am till 10.45am with lots happening in every session.

The highlight in every session was the game at the end.

There were some great skills learnt at the start when some kids learnt how to kick, mark and handball with others improving on their skills, confidence and knowledge of the game.

Graham Bonnett was a driving force for the Auskick with his Development Officer role in Gungahlin schools. Also, his knowledge being passed onto the Auskickers on the Sunday mornings was great. Thanks Graham.

I would also like to thank Mick Hesketh and all of the other parents that helped out through the season. This was great and allowed me more time to teach the kids. Thanks for all of your help.

The AFL Canberra should also be thanked. From supplying the equipment to helping fill in when Graham and I couldn't get there one Sunday.

Some of the highlights this year were when we had the half time games at the SCG and the Manuka Oval. The players really had a great time.

From playing to spectating, it was all good fun. One highlight for me was watching all of the kids develop in their skills and confidence.

Well done to all.

Haven fun in footy, John Bink

Junior League Awards

Junior League Presentation Sept 11 2002 - John Byrne

The club would like to congratulate John Byrne for being honoured by the Junior League in receiving the prestigious Joe McDonald Trophy at the recent Junior League presentation night.

Typically, Byrnesy mentioned that he personally knew and respected Joe and to be acknowledged in such a way meant a tremendous amount and was an honour he was unprepared for. For those in attendance it was also a rare occasion to witness the great man lost for words (for a minute or two…)

To briefly summarise John's contribution to Aussie Rules in Canberra over more than 30 years in Senior, Junior and Umpiring circles would not do justice. There is unlikely a footy club in Canberra he has not had some involvement with or still continues to contribute to.

To have John associated with the Junior Jets at the time of this award is certainly a great and proud moment for the club and one in which we wish all members will cherish - feel free to congratulate Byrnesy as this is indeed a worthy award with an appropriately worthy winner.

Junior League Merit Award - Graham Bonnett

Debateably, a bit longer in the tooth than John but with a greater claim to longevity around the Jets through his Senior club involvement.

When the Jets mention the words "In the beginning....." about when the club actually began, Graham appears in the text. He now spends his retirement assisting the youngsters in the Gungahlin district schools through the junior development program and is indispensable for the club in attracting players from these breeding grounds. It is hardly surprising then that Graham has been honoured by the Junior League in 2002 with a Merit Award for his efforts in promoting the game in Gungahlin which the Junior Jets are particularly pleased for him.

Graham is simply one of the games great ambassadors and, like Byrnesy, part of the Jets great assets.

Certificates of Appreciation

Club Merit / Appreciation Certificates

These are the worthy recipients of this year's Club appreciation certificates. The majority of these people have contributed vast amounts of time and effort in the development and running of the Club across all aspects. Volunteers are the backbone of our Club and we wish to thank each and every one for their valuable contributions.

We look forward to next season and hope that we will be able to reach or exceed the level of support and commitment shown this year. Club appreciation certificates are provided to people who's names are put forward by Team Coaches, Managers and Committee members.

Remember many hands make light work. So, don't be afraid to step up next year and get involved after all it is your club.

How the Presentation Day went

It began as a glorious sunny morning and continued into the afternoon. The Presentation day was kicked off with several games of footy occurring between the parents and players from the Auskick, combined 9/10/11's and culminating in the Under 13's being taken on by the Scary Dads.

After watching the skill level of the parents of the younger teams and the smooth sleeky skills of the dads of the 13's it was pretty obvious that the future of the club is assured in terms of our player competitiveness - if they all can live up to expectations then premierships will be on the horizon soon. What was not so assured was whether most of the dads would survive the following few days without major hamstring damage and shin and calf soreness. However, all games were played in good fun and at break-kneck speed (for the dads, anything over a trot must have seemed that fast....)

The crowd were getting into the spirit of the day as well and enjoyed the entertainment as well as the opportunity to kick back and relax while continuing the socialising.

At approximately 1.30pm it was time to adjourn to the hall in the primary school to do the award presentations.

Byrnesy got things off to a start by calling for quiet and introducing the Mistress of Ceremonies, the "eye-catching" Carolyn Roebuck who moved through the activities.

El Presidente Bruce Chalker started of the speeches with his satisfaction of the year in terms of our growth and that as a new club we were under the spotlight a bit but then we had also deserved this due to the way we had conducted ourselves as a club and were providing a good role model.

AJ, enjoying the pleasure of no sleep in 50 hours and the racking up of a truck-load of frequent flyer points recounted the year in terms of sponsor support. It is worth re-iterating here that the Jets really do appreciate that support and as we get more professional as a club we can put it down to this early and prolonged investment by local business. Each sponsor was presented with a plaque from the club as a small token of thanks. Let's see how many local businesses, over time, we can walk into that have the Blue Plaque prominent.

The 13's were first up with the awards and all players were awarded penants while our parent volunteers were awarded certificates of appreciation. The Best & Fairest was won by Ben McKenna from Goulburn which was an excellent return for his season's effort. Greg Legge took out the B&F Runner Up award while Shane Bartle received the Most Consistent Player award. It was fitting that these three featured in the main awards given they were also the three highest vote getters for the Jets in the Junior League voting.

Other award winners were Shane Redmond who received the Coach's Award, Damien Parello got the Most Improved and Josh Harrison-Brown was awarded the Encouragement Award.

The club adheres to the League policy of only having major awards for teams playing competition rules - which start at the Under 12's. Therefore the lower grades are given out team trophies to recognise their team contribution over the season.

With the team awards were the recognition of the contributions made by the Coaches and Team Managers that came from the players. Let's hope that this becomes a strong Jets tradition and continues where players (and parents) show their appreciation for those giving up their time.

As the billy-lids came up to receive their trophies, the smiles were a mile wide and little chests were puffed out. It was only fitting that the Under 11's as the last group up finished off the awards with a rousing rendition of the club song.

In the major club awards, Steve Crawford picked up the Jet of the Year award in a hotly contested vote against a superb calibre of nominations. The outstanding effort from Steve in probably the most unglamorous and unseen aspects of the club's administration and game-day work was ultimately rewarded. It was also a fitting reward for those who nominated and/or voted for Steve in understanding the importance to the club in what he has done. To those others also nominated, which were a few - there is certainly no need to be disappointed for missing out (if that's how you might feel) as merely being nominated is ample to be proud of.

Steve Crawford - Jet of the Year

The Coach of the Year award, another perpetual award but donated by John Byrne, was given to Rodger Braid the coach of the Under 10's. While Rodger seemed stoked to even be considered, he shouldn't under estimate himself and his potential. Byrnesy doesn't offer this sort of award unless there is a well deserved aspect to it.

Roger Braid - Coach of the Year

Finally it was all over with only the raffle to draw and then the day was done.

The Jets have now come through their third season with flying colours and firmly established in terms of living up to the principle that we exist for the kids to have fun. This day was for the kids and they were the stars.
