Before You Begin
Injury Management Officer

All advice given here is just that - advice. It is in no way meant to indicate the Junior Jets are experts in injury management and that the methods shown should be followed to the letter.

For all parents and coaches we strongly encourage you to seek proper medical advice and treatment as the first principle from either a qualified GP or an accredited sports trainer.

We encourage you to undertake first aid training and in particular, Sports Training. In fact, if you are interested in learning first-aid or some basic sports training then please contact us to discuss and if mutually agreeable we will help facilitate your participation. The obligation though is to assist our club with what you achieve.

The more assistance we get from parents, the better protected our players can be.

For all Coaches and Managers, when an injury happens, make sure that you do THE PAPERWORK.

The Injury Management Officer (IMO) reports directly to the Vice President Football Operations and works closely with other designated officers of the Club.

The IMO is responsible for injury prevention, reporting, management and education within the Gungahlin Jets Junior Football Club. This roles primary focus is to ensure proper reporting and maintenance of injury records, the maintenance of first aid kits, and first aid education within the club.

This section contains the contact details of our Injury Management Officer and their duties.

Injury Prevention
Injury Rehabilitation

Preventing injuries can be as simple as ensuring the opportunity for an injury to occur is minimised by establishing the areas most likely to contribute and taking insurance against it. The prevention of injuries also occurs immediately after training and games where "minor" injuries and "niggles" are attended to. Not doing so could culminate in an extreme injury condition. This section details some preventative measures that can be applied to minimise a players chance of injury.

Injury Rehabilitation is as important as the initial treatment as it affects how a player comes back from injury and ensures they make a graduated return. Without proper rehabilitation from an injury it could become progressively worse over time. This section explains some of the treatments that should occur following some common football injuries.

When injuries occur
The First Aid Kit

Injuries are an inevitable occurrence in footy. Coaches have a duty of care to ensure that injury prevention and management are a fundamental component of their planning. Managing injuries is also about ensuring no further damage can occur to the player. Therefore one of the most important decisions a coach must make is whether to allow a player to continue playing. It is better to rest the player if unsure so as not to increase any damage. This section looks at the first steps that should be taken when injuries occur.

First-Aid Kits are a fundamental part of the team equipment. They should be checked regularly and stocked with enough items to cover the main types of minor injury occurrences. Should you need replenishments for your first aid kit please contact the Injury Management Officer. This section details what should be contained in each team's first aid kit.

The Inevitable Paperwork

To all Junior Jets coaches and managers, the following should be applied as a process when an injury occurs:

  • Note the circumstances surrounding the lead-up and action after the injury.
  • Note the condition of the ground (if on a game-day this should already be captured)
  • Fill in the Injury Report Sheet as early as possible after the injury occurs.
  • Keep one copy for your (coaching) records.
  • Forward a copy to the Injury Management Officer.
  • If the injury requires hospitalisation, surgery or Doctor visitation and a claim is to be sought by parents/guardians then the Junior League's insurance covers all players. To make a claim you will need to do the following:
    • log on to the website of Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) who are the Junior League's insurer.
    • go to the Australian Football League Program.
    • to see information about the cover then use the navigation options. The cover is in the Non-Medicare section.
    • follow the instructions for making a claim - located in the left hand navigation area.
    • download the claim form; or
    • contact JLT via the contact information provided.

If still unsure regarding the Junior League's administrative requirements then please contact Judy Mustard (judy.mustard@aflact.com.au) of the Junior League.
