Academy Program

The Gungahlin Jets Coaching Academy is a centre of training and development excellence for all coaches of the Jets Junior Club.

The Academy provides support to coaches by coaching peers, and establishes an environment where coaches can learn and develop coaching skills for the benefit of every player in the Club.

Coaches selected to coach a Jets team are expected to participate in the Coaching Academy so that the Club can develop a positive coaching culture, so that parents can choose the Club with confidence in knowing that the coaches are undergoing continual training and development and to provide a mechanism to ensure that all stakeholders are adequately supported.

The Academy meets on a monthly basis throughout the season and the sessions are conducted in a number of ways:

  • Workshops
  • Specialist presenters
  • Game and skill analysis
  • Team building
  • On field skills sessions
  • Gala days - full club program
  • AFL forums and coaching programs
  • Mentoring sessions/coaching feedback
  • Player mentors (seniors and juniors)

The Academy program for 2008 will run from February to August, with a final wrap up and evaluation held in September, prior to the Jets Presentation Day.

The following dates have been proposed for 2008:

September date to correlate with the Junior Jets Presentation Day

Each session will focus on a particular theme of coaching or coach education, and coaches are encouraged to provide feedback on skills or knowledge required.

A coaching curriculum is a program by which the Club and all its coaches can develop greater efficiencies in delivering coaching to the various age groups in their care. Lets not forget that a well-planned effective program leads to greater enjoyment in our game and therefore greater likelihood for long term retention at the Club and our game.

A coaching curriculum is not a new concept. This initiative has been developed and implemented by other progressive clubs, it is present in the TAC Cup program, and it is present at some school football programs.

Rationale

The coaching curriculum offers the following benefits:

  1. The coaching curriculum offers coaches a pre-planned direction and continuity in the coaching of their participants. It sets out stages of coaching practice in a suggestive, not prescriptive, manner. This enables greater efficiency in what is coached, when it's coached, who should coach it and how it should be coached.
  2. The coaching curriculum offers the Gungahlin Jets, coaches and players a succession plan. This plan assists in the tracking of what has been learned and what player development has been established as a player travels through the age groups at the Club. This consequently reduces duplication of effort and time and allows a new coach to assess the standard a player has attained before reaching him/her.
  3. Every coach will agree that training and game skills need to be relevant to the physical and emotional capabilities of the players. A coaching curriculum assists in this by suggesting skills and game concepts that need to be introduced and reinforced during the season relevant to the group of players being coached.

The information contained below was produced by Anton Grbac, State Director of Coaching, Football Victoria. Gungahlin Jets Junior Football Club wishes to thank Anton for his work in putting together this curriculum. Coaches of the Gungahlin Jets Junior Football Club, under the direction of the Director of Coaching, are to use the coaching curriculum as a guide when developing their yearly program.
