PREAMBLE

Here at the Jets we take the issue of privacy very seriously. Although we are primarily an amateur organisation we are still dealing with people (especially the kids) and at times display names and pictures etc, thus the sensitivities about this are foremost in our approach. We are also dealing in a very big pool such that the Internet allows and are conscious of the implications of unrestricted access of our information to potentially a vast audience.

However we are also here to promote ourselves and the game of Australian Rules. This means firstly, we will largely be displaying information of a localised content to the supporters, families and friends of the Gungahlin and ACT region that incurs mentioning people and achievements, secondly, some generic information about Australian Rules will be displayed, and thirdly all the information we display is therefore meant to be viewed by a wide audience.

What does this mean if you have concerns regarding privacy though? Basically, we believe it is not a lot in terms of what this site collects and displays as far as personnel details go. We have a strict approach to the level of detail we capture and display about our members and prefer to have all correspondence go through the club's non web based contact mechanisms. However, we encourage you to use our on-line feedback page. There are times where we display data related to a particular item or event where the person(s) have allowed us to do so.

While we do not believe that we (knowingly) contravene any Australian Privacy Act principles or requirements (even whether we are actually subject to it either), the following items about privacy are provided to give some useful guidance for you and also demonstrate that irrespective of legislation the Junior Jets will try to uphold a sensible approach, that we hope is appreciated by the community. In fact, the Junior Jets encourage you to learn as much as you can about your rights - and in our case, your childrens rights, where websites are capturing (or have the potential to capture) and are displaying personnel details. Further on are some links to useful Privacy sites.

As to our copyright notice, this is displayed to remind browsers of our rights and ownership to the information, logos and pictures we provide that are purely of the Gungahlin Jets Juniors, as well as our authority to display other items on behalf of those owners.

PRIVACY

It's becoming the norm for the better or more respectable sites (apart from those mandated through legislation etc) to provide privacy policy data regarding the way a site gathers and uses information pertaining to the purpose of the site. Here we have provided the sort of headings and text that you might expect from these sites, to give some consistency while explaining what we do.

How we collect personal information.

We don't! The only information we collect on-line is via the Contact page where we prefer an email address to respond personally to feedback. While we suggest a phone or address from you for us to respond to you it is certainly not mandatory.

The club also collects personal details pertaining to players and guardians for administrative purposes through registration forms that are available to be downloaded and filled in. However, these forms are then received either by hand, post or fax.

How we use your personal information.

The information on these forms is strictly for internal administrative use for the Junior Jets, and where necessary, the Junior League's administrative requirements.

Information received from the on-line facility of the Junior Jets website is NOT retained in any database or forwarded on for inclusion in spurious email lists etc.

Hmm, what about other information?

Good point! When you look at our web site, it is highly likely that our Internet Service Provider (Cyberone) makes a record of your visit and logs the following information for statistical purposes:

  • your server address,
  • your top level domain name (for example .com, .gov, .au, .uk etc),
  • the pages you accessed and documents downloaded,
  • the previous site you have visited; and
  • the type of browser you are using.

Most ISP's do this as a matter of course and use the data to assist with marketing.

You must also be aware that this site is an unsecure site so if you intend to transmit data to us then please accept that any sensitive information is technically visible.

Cookies.

It is our belief that no cookies are employed by our ISP (Cyberone) on our behalf.

Just so you're aware, cookies can be either "persistent" or "session" based. Persistent cookies are stored on your computer, contain an expiration date, and may be used to track your browsing behaviour upon return to the issuing web site. Session cookies are short-lived, are used only during a browsing session, and expire when you quit your browser. Web programs use cookies to read various bits of data each time you connect to a site (where the cookie originated from) - that's why you may find some sites remember your name and/or obscure bits of information.

As of June 2003, this site uses "session" based cookies - but only for the use of the search facility. Being a session based cookie, it expires immediately the browser has closed. No information is collected from the PC the cookie resides on for the duration of the session.

Third-Parties

We don't use any!

These generally refer to other organisations/bodies that this site either uses in the collection of data, pays us for the collection of data; or we re-direct users through certain url's (web addresses) before getting to the actual hyperlink location that is displayed. That last method is what is called "click-stream". Sometimes when you click on a hyperlink and if you look quickly enough you may see the url locator on the bottom of the browser (in IE for instance) throw up a url or two that is not the actual url of the hyperlink - this may be because you are being re-directed. Because it happens so quick it is hardly discernable which is why Micrososft have embedded that little gem in its software.

Analysis

We don't do any!

Some sites that collect a lot of browser/customer data then spend large and inordinate amounts of time and effort analysing the data to slice and dice it into some distinguishable shape so that you get a better experience the next time you access the site - or so the theory has us believe.

It's easier for us if you just let us know what you like or don't like - we're small enough to listen and respond rather quickly.

Profiling

We don't!

Profiling concerns gathering and assembling information on demographic, spending and viewing/browsing patterns about individuals, groups and entities. The purpose allows targeted campaigns towards these points in an effort, primarily, for flogging off product(s). Today there are some very sophisticated mechanisms for achieving this and SPAM is the major vehicle through email. However, the banner ads you often now see in websites are being more and more controlled by profiling techniques that have possibly captured and assessed information about you. It is no coincidence that the ads may appeal to you.
