JETSWEB - Information for Members and Guests of the Gungahlin JETS AFC.

The JETS have been part of the Amatuer Australian Football Competition in Canberra since 1982. Over that time the club has won five Premierships, and has grown to a club with over 450 members, two Senior teams, six Junior teams, and over 60 kids playing AUSKICK. The JETS have been part of the Gungahlin Community since 1996 and continue to grow in the region. The club's short-term goal is to dominate the ACTAFL Canberra Disctrict Competition, with an ultimate goal of entering teams in the ACTAFL's Premier Competition.

Division 2 - JETS Magoos Continue to Improve

In one of their best starts to the season for several years the JETS head the Division 2 ladder a game clear, courtesy of a 4-goal win over Belconnen at Ken Zimmer Oval on Saturday. After hard-fought wins in the previous two rounds the JETS were faced with another test against the 2006 Premiers who were full of running early. The JETS were also working hard, enjoying plenty of early possession and several entries into their forward 50, only to see the ball repelled by the Belconnen defence. With scoring shots almost even at quarter time, the JETS had managed a wasteful 2 goals 5 behinds to Belconnen’s 4 goals 4 behinds and had it all to do in the second term to get them into the contest.

The JETS started well enough in the second, scoring good early goals but a lack of pressure at times allowed Belconnen to provide the quick reply as both teams traded goals for most of the quarter. Kicking another wasteful 5 goals 5 behinds, the JETS still managed to outscore Belconnen’s 4 goals 1 behind for the quarter and had reduced the halftime deficit to just 1 point after trailing by more than 4 goals during the term. Good work from Matt Ryall, Peter Mant, Michael Barnes and Kane Morse in this quarter had brought the JETS back into the contest, while the evergreen Marc Housley was a strong leader in the midfield.

The JETS continued their momentum in the third quarter as the pace of the game picked-up with both sides putting on an entertaining game of footy; however as the quarter wore-on the game began to swing in the JETS favor. Belconnen began to drop off the pace a little as the JETS enjoyed continued drive through their midfield, providing good delivery to the JETS forwards and by the last change the JETS held a useful 13-point lead.

With the Magpies still well and truly in the contest they opened the last quarter with an early goal to reduce the margin to 7 points, and when they had another shot just minutes later it looked as though they still had plenty left to offer. Just as Belconnen had worked themselves back into the contest, the JETS stepped up a gear to score the next three goals and re-gain control of the match. Both sides scored another goal late in the game as the JETS improved on their three-quarter time lead to win an entertaining contest by 25 points.

Final Score: JETS 15-14-104 def Belconnen 12-7-79

Goals: 5 G. O’Dwyer, 2 R. Wheatley, D. Frankel, G. McClure, 1 G. Mace, S. King, K. Morse, S. Hubert

In another tough test the JETS travel to Kenmore Oval this Saturday to take on the Goulburn Swans. Game starts at 2pm
