Division
1 - JETS Comfortable Win
The JETS clashed with
fourth-placed Murrumbidgee at Stirling oval on Sunday, hoping
for a good win to keep their place at the top of the table.
Recent losses to both sides meant a win here was crucial to
retain ladder position and the JETS task was made tougher
with several key players missing through injury or unavailability.
Murrumbidgee enjoyed
first use of the footy at the opening bounce through good
work from Broers and the Juggas midfield – a trend that
would continue for most of the first half; however the JETS
defence easily repelled the early attacks to set up goals
for themselves through Bryce, Porter and Louis before the
Juggernauts got their first chance courtesy of a mark and
goal to Taylor. That was the last time Murrumbidgee troubled
the scorers for the first term as the JETS enjoyed a blistering
15-minute period of hard running and precision delivery by
hand and foot to set up another 6 goals for the quarter, and
by the first change they held a 51-point lead.
The JETS continued
their run in the second term, scoring early goals to increase
the margin, before the Juggernauts began to work themselves
into the contest with a couple of well-crafted goals, although
they still trailed by 66 points at the main break. Damon Bryce
and Brett Martin were in great touch for the JETS, racking
up plenty of possessions while Matt Porter was finishing well
in the JETS forward line.
Murrumbidgee carried
some momentum into the third quarter, enjoying more time in
possession, reducing the JETS goal-scoring opportunities.
They were running much harder than the first half, creating
loose players in their forward line, resulting in much-needed
goals and by midway through the quarter the JETS lead had
been reduced to 8 goals. Just as the Juggernauts looked like
getting a roll-on, the JETS stepped up again to regain control
of the match and a couple of late goals from Louis and Porter
saw the momentum swing back in favour of the JETS at the last
change.
With the game all but
won the JETS were intent on increasing their 62-point lead
and after early goals to Schlesinger and Porter, the game
was put beyond doubt. Minutes later Porter slotted his 7th
goal for the game which was also the 345th goal of his JETS
career and in doing so broke a 9-year record, becoming the
new JETS all-time goal-scoring record holder. Nick Louis then
capped-off a great day in unfamiliar territory as a forward,
kicking his 4th goal in his last game for the JETS in 2007,
and finishing on a winning note as the JETS ran-out 87-point
victors.

get down to the Zee for another great day of footy.

Division 2 - Magoos Go Down Fighting
The Magoos faced their
fourth tough game in a row on Saturday, this time against
Goulburn in Goulburn in a top-of-the-table clash. The Swans
are a very good side at home and were always going to be tough
to beat. The JETS had been in good recent form; however their
task was made much tougher when they lost 9 of their best
players from the week before, and a vastly different squad
needed a committed four-quarter effort to come home with a
win.
The opening quarter
was a tight contest as neither side was allowed to control
the play for long periods. Goulburn had the better of the
scoring opportunities but great defensive pressure from the
JETS back six produced a wasteful 2 goals 5 behinds from Goulburn
for the quarter, while the JETS forwards made a better effort
of their chances with 3 goals 2 behinds to go into the first
change with a 3-point lead. The arm wrestle continued in the
second term with both sides trading goals and neither side
able to gain any real advantage. The JETS lesser-lights had
stepped into the breach, competing well in their positions
and giving the JETS plenty of fight, going into the main break
with a slender 2-point lead.
Leg speed was critical
in the third term to break the shackles of this contest and
the combination of injuries to key players, and some players
a little underdone saw the JETS fall off the pace and Goulburn
gained the advantage they had been seeking for two and a half
quarters. With 3 goals to 1 for the quarter the Swans headed
into the last change with a 9-point lead and the JETS needed
to tough it out in the last. The momentum of the game was
squarely in Goulburn’s favour; however the JETS fought-on
bravely and never gave up the contest. In the end Goulburn
had too much run when it counted, adding a further 3 goals
to the JETS 1 for the quarter and running out 4-goal winners.
Final
Score: JETS 9-8-62 def by Goulburn 12-14-86
Goals:
4 A. Ingold, 3 S. King, 1 A. Hill, D. Frankel
Best:
A. Hill, S. McNeill, S. May, R. Wheatley, A. Ingold
While
disappointed to lose this one, the JETS did perform well with
many good players unavailable and were pleased with the four-quarter
effort.
Next
Saturday the JETS face RMC who pose probably the toughest
challenge to date, although with the return of several players
this week the JETS chances of returning to the winners list
will be boosted. The game is at Ken Zimmer Oval and kicks-off
at 12pm.
