1 – JETS Too Good for Demons
The
JETS went into the Round 7 match against the Eastlake Demons
looking to continue their good form from the week before;
however the game didn’t start well, losing Stevens in
the opening minutes of the game which resulted in changes
to the midfield rotations. The windy conditions caused skill
errors for both sides, with the JETS unable to execute their
running game allowing Eastlake to stay close on the scoreboard
and in the contest. Extreme pressure down back from Ryall
with long, direct kicking into the hotspot by Kocmar, Morse
and Schlesinger, and excellent in and under work by Bryce
saw the JETS go into quarter time with an 8 point lead, realising
that they had a game on their hands. Matt Porter’s first
goal for the game also saw him move to out-right all time
goal kicking record holder for the JETS.
The
JETS started the second quarter better but Eastlake stepped
up to the challenge and made the JETS work hard for possessions
and scoring opportunities. The JETS were overusing the footy
and not providing talk to the ball carrier, resulting in too
many turnovers and easy possessions for Eastlake’s players
rebounding into their forward line. It was only thanks to
another brilliant effort by the backline, lead by Kelly with
great run and support by T. Scholfield and Clarkson that Eastlake
were not able to make the most of their opportunities. Then,
in what appeared to be a season-ending shoulder injury to
McLeod, the JETS were left with only two men on the bench
and in need of all players to step up to the challenge being
mounted by Eastlake. A fantastic direct passage of JETS play
followed resulting in a goal before half time to increase
their lead to 24 points, and was exactly what the coaching
staff had been looking for all day. This would hopefully set
the standard for the JETS for the second half.
The
third quarter saw the JETS lift their intensity and play more
positive, direct footy. The midfield were getting first hands
on the footy and getting the ball in quickly to the forward
line, resulting in goals. The half back line rebounded the
ball every time Eastlake took it forward, well supported by
the midfield and half forward line that started to run, use
the ball more efficiently and effectively, providing better
options for the ball carrier. The JETS also started to direct
play onto the right side of the ground for better scoring
opportunities and looked to set up a good victory with a solid
third quarter, stretching the lead to 38 points going into
¾ time.
With
only two on the bench the JETS were working overtime, especially
through the midfield and the final quarter was always going
to prove difficult for the JETS to maintain their run. To
the players’ credit they showed great commitment and
effort, continuing to use the ball well, applying pressure
to Eastlake and making the most of their scoring opportunities.
In the windy conditions courtesy of the Amaroo Doctor, the
JETS did well to finish with a 50 point win over an Eastlake
that, like the Doctor never gave up all day.
Final
Score: JETS 13-11-89 def Eastlake 6-3-39
Goals:
Porter 6, Bryce 4, McNeill 2, Schlesinger 1
Best: Kocmar, Kelly, Bryce, T Scholfield,

With
a solid all round performance and a number of players due
to return from injury and unavailability over the next few
rounds, the JETS are in a good position in both grades as
they approach the half way mark of the season.
