JETS
Too Good
It
was Reid Oval where the JETS finally fronted up to welcome
the Tuggeranong Hawks back into the AFL Canberra Division
1 competition, following the disappointment of the Hawks forfeit
a few weeks earlier and some confusion over the location of
the game. It didn’t take long for the JETS to show the
Hawks the quality of football required to succeed at this
level with the midfield, especially Martin dominating centre
clearances and the forward line capitalising on fast ball
movement on the small ground. The JETS piled on 11 goals in
the first quarter thanks to first hands on the footy, hard
running and excellent use of the ball around the ground. The
only thing that looked like slowing down the JETS was a lack
of balls, as the JETS kept putting them out of the ground.
The
second quarter started like the first with the JETS midfield
getting first use of the ball from the centre and moving it
forward quickly. Unfortunately, as the score increased, so
did the amount of handballs the JETS were using, too often
resulting in a turnover which gave the Hawks a chance at the
footy. Once again, the JETS backline stood up to every challenge
thrown at them, with Kelly again as solid as a rock in the
last line of defence. After wasting opportunities early in
the quarter, the JETS regained their focus and got back to
their game plan for the rest of the quarter to stack-on 7
goals and at the main break they held an imposing 106-point
lead.
The
third quarter started in what was now common fashion, with
the JETS midfield slaughtering the Hawks out of the centre
and moving the ball quickly into their forward line. Bryce
continued with his excellent recent form, providing marking
options and getting in and under to cause the Hawks defence
problems. With the win well and truly in the bank, it was
a matter of the JETS by how far and an opportunity to get
the game plan working well, but as has been the curse of the
JETS this season, injuries struck. The JETS lost McNeill,
Kelly and Clarkson during the third term requiring a significant
re-structure to the side by the coaching staff. While several
players needed to play in unfamiliar positions and roles,
it was a credit to all that the JETS hardly missed a beat
as they piled on another 7 goals to go into the final quarter
136 points up.
In
the final quarter and with nothing to gain the Hawks made
their intentions clear as they focussed on the man rather
than the ball; however they soon found out that not only can
the JETS play good footy, they can take whatever is thrown
at them. The JETS continued to play footy while the Hawks
continued to chase blue, black and white jumpers which saw
an 8-goal quarter from the JETS and a final margin of 186
points.
FINAL
SCORE: JETS 33-14-212 def Tuggeranong 3-8-26
Goals:
7 M. Porter, 5 W. Carruthers, 4 S. Trusedale, 3 A. Kouvaras,
R. Schlesinger, P.Stevens, 2 T. Scholfield, 1 B. Thornton,
D. Scholfield, D. Bryce, A. Wainwright, J. Kocmar and B. Martin.
Best:
D. Bryant, B. Martin, P. Stevens, D. Munday, W. Carruthers.
In
what was a good all round effort by the JETS, concerns for
the coaching staff were injuries to key players. The players’
willingness to do the hard defensive work at all times, regardless
of the scoreboard will be a positive from this game to take
into next weeks big clash with Woden before the bye. Game
starts at 2.15pm at Ken Zimmer Oval.
Magoos
Win Tough Encounter
In
what is always a tough game, the Magoos took-on and beat the
Yass Roos on their home turf on Saturday and gave Nathan Arch
the celebration he deserved in his 150th game for the JETS.
Keen
to start well, the JETS did most of the early attacking and
some good work saw their first goal inside 5 minutes. A further
10 minutes into attack with disappointing finishing brought
about a series of behinds for the JETS before Yass responded
with a couple of goals to work themselves into the contest,
and by quarter time had taken the lead by 5 points. It was
goal for goal in the second term as neither side were able
to establish a break before the JETS managed two goals in
a row to grab a handy lead. Much of the play was contained
between half forward and half back for the quarter as a terrific
battle developed and by half time only a goal separated the
teams in favour of the JETS.
The
JETS were able to break through for the all-important first
goal of the third quarter to give them a little breathing
space; however Yass responded once again to keep the margin
within a kick. Both sides traded another goal each to continue
the goal-scoring trend before the JETS finished the quarter
with the “bookend” goal that extended their lead
to 11 points.
A
great start to the last quarter was needed and it was the
JETS who responded with an early goal and more importantly,
a rare back-to-back goal that made Yass’ job even tougher.
When the JETS scored another major just minutes later to extend
their lead to the largest of the game, the flood-gates threatened
to open; however as Yass had done all day – they responded
with a couple of quick goals to deliver faint hope to the
large home crowd. That hope was snuffed-out soon after with
a miraculous boundary line snap from Housley and when the
JETS scored the last goal of the game a few minutes later
they finished on top in a great contest.
FINAL
SCORE: JETS 12-10-82 def Yass 8-13-61
Goals:
4 M. Housley, 3 A. Ingold, 1 N. Arch, A. Hill, S. King, P.
Mant
Best:
G. O’Dwyer, J. Ryan, B. Lee, R. Wheatley and P. Mant.
Every
player stood up in this game which was needed to beat a spirited
Yass team, and must be repeated next week against a resurgent
Cooma if the Magoos want to continue their winning-run. Game
starts at 12pm at Ken Zimmer Oval.
