JETSWEB - Information for Members and Guests of the Gungahlin JETS AFC.

The JETS have been part of the Amatuer Australian Football Competition in Canberra since 1982. Over that time the club has won five Premierships, and has grown to a club with over 450 members, two Senior teams, six Junior teams, and over 60 kids playing AUSKICK. The JETS have been part of the Gungahlin Community since 1996 and continue to grow in the region. The club's short-term goal is to dominate the ACTAFL Canberra Disctrict Competition, with an ultimate goal of entering teams in the ACTAFL's Premier Competition.

Division 1 - JETS Fail to Fire

The JETS were well beaten by Woden last Sunday in their top of the table clash at Ken Zimmer Oval, surrendering top spot on the ladder for the first time since Round 1 of the 2006 season.

A bright start was needed by the JETS to get on top of the contest early; however the loss of four key players from their 31-goal romp over Tuggeranong in Round 8 provided a less than ideal preparation which was evident from the first bounce. A flat JETS side allowed Woden players to run, carry the ball freely and deliver to their forwards with little or no pressure and in a matter of minutes the Blues had opened up a four goal lead. The JETS were able to scramble a goal through good running from Kouvaras but Woden answered with two more goals as the JETS players struggled with their defensive game. By quarter time Woden had opened up a 5-goal lead which was the eventual winning margin.

The JETS needed to recover quickly from their worst effort in two seasons and while their start to the second was an improvement, Woden were allowed to keep their run going and increase their lead by 3 points through accurate finishing with 3 goals 1 behind for the quarter. In contrast, the JETS wasted their chances to get back into the game kicking 2 goals 4 behinds and trailed by 32 points at the main break.

A huge effort was needed in the third term to stop Woden from running away with the game and the JETS delivered to some extent, restricting Woden’s opportunities while creating some for themselves as a dour struggle developed. Neither side were able to create any real advantage during the quarter as both sides has the same number of scoring shots, but Woden were once again more efficient in front of goals to extend their lead at the last change. The JETS had a couple of chances to reduce the deficit but a missed set shot from inside 50 was followed by a ‘gimme’ goal that was touched on the line in the last passage of play for the quarter. This really summed-up the game – the JETS inability to do what was needed to ensure the goal was scored, and Woden’s desperation to maintain their advantage.

Facing a 37-point deficit going into the last quarter the JETS attacked early with 2 quick goals, and when they had another set shot from 35m out in front of goals, there was faint hope they could work back into the contest. A goal would have brought them back within 19 points but frustratingly, that shot was missed. From the kick in, Woden worked the ball into their forward line for a goal and then kept the JETS at arms length for the remainder of the quarter to run out 32-point victors.

FINAL SCORE: JETS 6-9-45 lost to Woden 12-5-77

Goals: 2 S. Truesdale, 1 A. Kouvaras, M. Porter, D. Bryce and B. Martin

Best: J. Kocmar, D. Munday, B. Martin, W. Carruthers and D. Bryant

This Saturday the JETS will be looking for an improved effort against a Murrumbidgee team desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top four. The game is at Stirling Oval and kicks-off at 2.15pm.

Division 2 – Magoos Roll On

In the early game, the Magoos kept their winning run going with a 130-point thumping of the Cooma Blue Cats in a dominant display diminished only by a poor conversion rate.

The JETS went into this game missing several key players promoted to the Ones, and were up against a new-look Cooma side that had benefited from a recent affiliation with Woden so a tough encounter was expected. The first quarter didn’t disappoint as both sides had plenty of it in the early exchanges in a fairly even contest, although the JETS return of 2 goals 5 behinds kept Cooma in it at the first change. Expecting more of the same in the second term, the JETS stepped up a gear to take the game up to, and away from the Blue Cats, scoring 7 goals 6 behinds for the quarter to Cooma’s single point - and as it turned out, their last score for the match.

The third term was more of the same as the JETS continued to pepper the goals but a wasteful 4 goals 7 behinds for the quarter was frustrating to watch. Although Cooma didn’t score they did provide a contest in the face of a mounting injury list, but by three-quarter time faced an insurmountable 75-point deficit.

The JETS ran on with the game in the last as the Blue Cats fell away, and while they did score 8 goals for the quarter, their poor conversion rate continued with 7 behinds as well. With over 40 scoring shots for the game this would have been the perfect opportunity to reel in ANU’s huge percentage but it was still an impressive effort all over the ground, particularly to hold Cooma to such a low score.

FINAL SCORE: JETS 19-25-139 def Cooma 1-3-9

Goals: 6 G. Budd, 4 P. Mant, 3 B. Lee, 2 D. Frankel, 1 N. Arch, M. Housley, A. Ingold, R. Brasnett

Best: S. Herbert, G. Budd, R. Wheatley, P. Mant, B. Lee

The Magoos face the Juggernauts this Saturday at Stirling oval in the early game. The Jugs are less than 1 percent out of the top four and will be looking for an upset over the JETS to stay in touch. A win to the JETS will keep them at least equal top spot for another week. Game kicks off at 12pm.
