JETSWEB - Information for Members and Guests of the Gungahlin JETS AFC.

The JETS have been part of the Amatuer Australian Football Competition in Canberra since 1982. Over that time the club has won five Premierships, and has grown to a club with over 450 members, two Senior teams, six Junior teams, and over 60 kids playing AUSKICK. The JETS have been part of the Gungahlin Community since 1996 and continue to grow in the region. The club's short-term goal is to dominate the ACTAFL Canberra Disctrict Competition, with an ultimate goal of entering teams in the ACTAFL's Premier Competition.

Division 1 – JETS vs Juggernauts

A number of late changes to the side saw a different line up to recent weeks take the ground for the JETS at Stirling oval to take on a Murrumbidgee side that was looking to stay in touch with the top four. The changes didn’t unsettle the JETS however, who started the game in strong fashion, moving the ball quickly out of the centre against the wind to kick 5 first quarter gaols, skipping to a 24 point lead at quarter time.

The second quarter saw the JETS continue to dominate, with the half back line continually rebound the footy whenever the Juggers took it forward. The JETS midfield were also dominant, and good use of the footy across the ground combined well with a solid game plan to produce 7 goals to 1 for the quarter and give the JETS an impressive 63 point advantage at the long break.

Unfortunately the JETS took the foot off the pedal in the third quarter which allowed the Jugs into the contest, and to their credit threw everything at the JETS despite the score board. Continued hard work from the JETS backline kept the Juggers to two goals for the quarter and the JETS went into the last change with a 61-point advantage..

In his ¾ time address, Coach Kouvaras asked his side to use the final quarter to get back to the game plan and team play they had displayed in the first half, emphasising the importance of the coming month of football to the sides double chance. With the coach leading from the front, the JETS responded with a much improved quarter of football, putting on 6 unanswered goals to run out 101 point winners. In a game where all players contributed, the midfield and back line again lead the way for the JETS.

FINAL SCORE: JETS 20-13-133 def Juggernauts 4-8-32

GOALS: Porter 6, Martin 4, Schlesinger 2, Bryce 2, Clayton 2, Truesdale 2, Mace 1, Munday 1

BEST: Kouvaras, J Burgess, Martin, Clayton, Truesdale

Despite another week with a number of changes due to injuries and unavailability, the JETS produced three very good quarters of footy. It will be important for the JETS to build on the win and make sure that all players are ready for four quarters of footy to get back into the top two, with their last quarter effort from this game sure to provide plenty of encouragement for the coaches next week. This Saturday the JETS take on Eastlake at Ken Zimmer Oval at 2.15pm.

Division 2 – JETS vs Juggernauts

The JETS arrived at Stirling Oval to take on Murrumbidgee hoping to continue their good form in a bid to maintain their spot on the ladder. A number of changes were made to the side on Thursday night due to injuries in both grades which saw a very different line up, and when further changes were made late Friday the coaching staff had to make a number of “calls” to ensure a full compliment for both grades.

The first quarter started with the JETS kicking with the wind and using the ball well out of the centre thanks to dominance in the ruck by Morgan and first hands on the footy by the midfield of Wheatley, Mant and Morse. Frankel was providing a good target up forward, and at the end of a hard fought quarter the JETS had a 9 point lead.

Murrumbidgee stepped up a gear with the wind in the second quarter, but the JETS backline responded well to the Jugs’ challenge, making their direct opponent earn every kick. The JETS struggled to get the ball forward into the wind and as a result went into the main break 17 points down; however they were confident they could wipe the deficit with the wind advantage in the third quarter.

Despite continued dominance in the ruck, and a magnificent quarter by Wheatley who seemed to be at every contest, the JETS again struggled to make an impact on the scoreboard. Frankel continued to cause headaches for the Juggers defence while Gregory and Brasnett played an important link role through the middle of the ground, and May was magnificent across the half back line. The JETS went into three quarter time 2 goals down and confident they could fight out the game.

All talk of fighting out the game seemed to stay in the three quarter time huddle however, as the Juggers dominated the last quarter both in terms of possession and on the scoreboard. The backline continued to battle it out bravely, but were given little support from up the ground as far as accountability. Wheatley continued make every contest and provide some resistance to the Juggers, but had little support. In a disappointing finish to the game, the Juggers kicked 6 unanswered goals to run out convincing 56 point winners.

FINAL SCORE: JETS 9-6-60 def by Juggernauts 17-14-116

GOALS: Frankle 2, Brasnett 1, George 1, King 1, Mant 1, Morse 1, Holland 1, Parkin 1
BEST: Wheatley, Gregory, Frankle, Morgan, Mant

As evident by the last quarter fade out, it is crucial that players get to training in the second half of the year if the JETS are to be competitive come finals time. A big thanks to those players who made themselves available at short notice to help out the club, it is that sort of willingness to get in and “do your bit” that we will need to ensure success. Next Saturday the JETS line up against Eastlake in a double-header at Ken Zimmer Oval. Kick-off is at 12pm.
