Division
1 - JETS Cruise to Victory
The
JETS faced up to the only side that they hadn’t beaten
in 2007 at Ken Zimmer Oval on Saturday, aiming to set the
record straight and gain some ascendency leading into the
finals series. The first quarter was an even contest with
both sides testing each other and exhibiting good skills that
resulted in fluent ball movement up and down the ground. The
JETS managed to gain a slight advantage going into quarter
time with a 14 point lead due mainly to great run and support
to the ball carrier.
The
second quarter was much like the first, with both sides using
the ball well when in possession and applying pressure when
without the footy. The JETS gained momentum, improving as
the game went on as their strong forward line were causing
Woden problems every time the JETS went into attack. The run
of the midfielders and the rebound from the backline was also
starting to give the JETS the upper hand and the lead extended
going into the long break.
The
JETS came out switched on and ready to play after half time,
moving the ball long and direct and not pushing too many handballs
like they had been in recent weeks. The JETS forward line
were thriving with the direct style of play which caused plenty
of headaches for Woden, but not as bad as Burgos after a late
high shot knocked him out. To Burgo's credit he showed toughness
in playing out the quarter. With the JETS playing great attacking
footy and Woden unable to match their intensity, the JETS
outscored Woden again to take a handy lead into ¾ time.
The
JETS spoke of finishing off the game and continuing to apply
pressure in the ¾ time huddle, and followed up their
words with action in the final quarter. The movement of the
footy into the JETS forward line was close to the best it
had been all year, leaving the Woden defenders with little
hope as the lead extended beyond doubt. With just over 7 minutes
left in the game and the JETS holding an unassailable lead,
a nasty melee developed involving players officials and spectators.
Play
resumed after five or so minutes and the match finished up
with the JETS convincing winners by 62 points and after a
dominant second half of footy that restricted Woden to one
goal.

The JETS now need to build over the final month of the season
on the style of play that Woden simply had no answer for.
If the JETS continue to play this brand of footy and show
the spirit and desire that was evident in the game, they will
be very tough to beat when it counts comes finals time. |
