ONES
V TUGGERANONG (Double chance locked in with JETS massive win)
The
JETS headed south to take on Tuggeranong Hawks at the disgraceful
Kambah Oval for what was Matt Ryall’s 50th game for
the club. A number of late withdrawals saw the JETS go into
the game with only one fit player on the bench (rumours of
Porter pulling out due to a pie crust getting stuck in his
throat are still to be confirmed). Thanks to Stevens, Budd
and Thornton who sat on the bench in case of emergencies despite
all carrying niggling injuries.
The
JETS began the game with a solid 7 goal to 3 goal quarter
to take a handy 26 point lead into the first break. The Hawks
were providing more a challenge then perhaps some of the JETS
had anticipated, although McNeill was magnificent in the backline
stopping a number of the Hawks forward movements with strong
marks.
The
JETS spoke about improving on their run, use of the footy
and pressure at the ¼ time break, and continued to
improve on these as the quarter progressed. The JETS began
to use the ball well through the midfield, with G McLeod providing
a good link on the wing in a number of passages of play. The
JETS added 6 goals for the quarter to take a very handy 10
goal lead into the long break.
With
finals footy just around the corner, the coaches spoke to
the JETS about needing to continue to improve on doing the
team things and maintaining pressure when not in possession
during ½ time. The JETS seemed to lose focus during
the break however, and as a result didn’t play smart
footy in the third quarter. The JETS fell into the trap of
kicking the ball long into the dead pocket and not following
team rules and the game plan, and a number of low percentage
shots on goal were taken as a result with the JETS adding
a poor 3 goals 8 for the quarter to extend their lead to 81
points.
At
¾ time the JETS again spoke about the importance of
the coming month of footy, and the need to work for each other
and to use the ball well whenever in possession. All players
responded to play a super quarter of footy, adding 11 goals
2. The JETS dominated all across the ground, with the ball
rebounding out of the JETS backline quickly through the midfield
and into the forward line that was creating space and opportunities
for each other. Ryall was superb in the ruck in his 50th,
giving the JETS first use of the footy at stoppages while
Skipper Scholfield set up attack after attack from the half
back line all day. In the end, the JETS crushed the Hawks
by 136 points with a pretty good all round effort.

The
win over the Hawks assures the JETS of a top 2 finish this
year and the double chance in the finals. With games against
Murrumbidgee and ANU to come, the Minor Premiership is still
up for grabs and two solid wins in these last rounds will
not only give the JETS that prize but also a lot of confidence
going into the finals. With a number of players starting to
return from injury and unavailability, players need to get
to training to put pressure on each other and the selectors
for those highly desired spots in the finals sides.
MAGOOS
V BELCONNEN (JETS points not enough as Magpies prove too tough!)
The
Magoos headed to the JETS old home ground of Jamo Oval to
take on a Belconnen side that posted two massive wins over
Eastlake and Harman in their past two games. The JETS were
fresh after a week off, all be it missing a few players due
to injury and unavailability. The Magpies came out firing
in the first quarter, and the JETS were very slow out of the
blocks. The desperation that was shown in the ANU game two
weeks earlier was missing, and unfortunately it would stay
that way for the first half. The JETS still managed to stay
within 2 points of Belconnen at the first break.
With
the aid of the breeze the Magpies got away to a 7 goal lead
in the second quarter, before some good play resulting in
3 late goals to the JETS pegged it back to a 26 point deficit
at half time. The JETS were hanging on mainly due to the superb
efforts of Booger Mace up forward, who was proving a real
handful for the Magpies defence.
The
new look JETS coaching staff gave the Magoos a roasting at
half time and the JETS were a completely different side in
the third quarter. Players in all positions – with the
exception of May who spent half the game getting his tissue-strength
hamstring massaged - absolutely dominated all over the park.
The JETS continually moved the ball inside their forward 50.
As has plagued the JETS in both grades all year, accuracy
in front of the sticks was a major issue with the JETS not
capitalising on their dominance, only managing to add 1 goal
9 to 0 for the quarter.
The
JETS trailed by 11 points going into the final quarter and
had a sniff of victory. Unfortunately the JETS also only had
one fit player left on the bench, and with the assistance
of the wind in the last quarter, the Magpies were able to
add 4 goals to finish 23 point winners. In the end the Magpies
were too strong for on the day, although if the JETS had have
kicked straight it may have been a different story with 7
extra scoring shots for the game.

Frankel,
Housely and Ingold were all sorely missed in the forward line
and will add direction and accuracy as they return over the
coming weeks. Mace was awesome kicking 5 goals, while Dave
Bryant was brilliant in the ruck all day. Also, a special
mention must go to Lachy Colquhoun who made another stunning
comeback, dislocating a Belco player's shoulder in the process
before retiring again after the match. The loss meant the
Magoos dropped back to second on the table, and now need to
win their last two games to be assured of a top 2 spot on
the ladder and double chance in the finals.
