ONES
V MURRUMBIDGEE (Murrumbidgee fizzle as JETS sizzle)
The JETS welcomed
Murrumbidgee to Ken Zimmer Oval for a Round 17 clash where
the JETS side again was subject to last minute changes due
to injuries that saw Sean McLeod backing up after a full game
for the Magoos. Murrumbidgee came out attacking and got the
jump on the JETS with a smart game plan that the JETS were
slow to react to. Also putting the JETS on the back foot early
was a heavy knock to Simon McNeill that needed a reshuffling
of the JETS back line. The JETS regained their composure late
in the quarter to take a 7 point lead into the first break.
With
talk in the ¼ time huddle focusing on being more accountable,
the JETS responded by playing more team oriented footy. Good
attack on the ball meant the JETS were getting first use and
moved the ball long and direct to the forward line resulting
in a 7 goal quarter. Injury woes for the JETS continued with
Brett Martin taken to hospital to get 7 stitches in his lip
after a heavy collision in his first game back from a leg
injury. The JETS improved quarter of footy saw them take a
handy 41 point lead into ½ time.
The 3rd quarter
saw the JETS continue to apply pressure to Murrumbidgee’s
ball carriers, causing skill errors and turnovers. The JETS
were using the footy brilliantly, with the forward line again
getting plenty of delivery. The Murrumbidgee defenders seemed
to have no answer for the incredible slowness of J Burgess,
which was causing them headaches all round. As they have done
all year, the backline set up numerous attacking plays, repelling
most of Murrumbidgee’s advances to see the JETS lead
extend to 58 points at the final break.
Well aware
of the importance of next weeks game, the JETS spoke about
finishing game off in the ¾ time huddle. All players
took it upon themselves in the last quarter to ensure pressure
was maintained whenever Murrumbidgee were in possession. With
Carruthers winning the ball at stoppages, and players prepared
to run and support each other the passages of ball movement
were pleasing. A 5 goal to none last quarter saw the JETS
run out 89 point winners in their last home game for the year.

With one round
to go in the regular season, the JETS are building momentum
nicely leading into the final series. However, the job isn’t
done yet, with top spot to be determined against old rivals
ANU on Saturday. The constant pressure on the opposition that
the JETS have been working on will need to be increased for
the match, as will clean use of the footy and making the most
of scoring opportunities in what is sure to be a super game.
GO YOU MIGHTY JETS – I’M EXCITED!
MAGOOS
V GOULBURN (Top two in sight as JETS turn out Swans lights)
The
JETS took to Ken Zimmer Oval for the last time in season 2007
needing a win over Goulburn to keep their hopes of a top two
finish alive. The day didn’t start well for the JETS
losing Hill with a dislocated finger in the warm-up, but the
side put that out of their mind to put on a great first quarter
of footy. The JETS were moving the ball quickly into the forward
line, playing the wind superbly and all players were on top
in their respective contests in one of the best quarters of
footy the JETS had played all season. The result was a 5 goal
to 1 quarter – 4 of the JETS goals to Mace – and
a handy 26 point lead at the first break.
Goulburn
turned the tables on the JETS from the start of the second
quarter, beating the JETS to ball and making all the play
for the quarter. The JETS had stopped their hard running,
attack on the footy and working for each other to allow Goulburn
right back into game. With the JETS unable to add a score
for the quarter, the scores at half time were 33 to 32 to
the JETS.
The
side spoke of the importance of the third quarter to their
season at half time, and the need to get first hands on the
footy, not play the dead pocket and to give the forwards every
opportunity with good use of the ball and direct play. All
players stepped up in the third quarter to put on a much improved
display, led by Clayton and Wheatley getting in and under
the packs to get first hands on the footy. The JETS added
3 goals for the term to take a 12 point lead into the final
quarter.
With
a fight still on their hands, the JETS played another super
quarter of footy. All players again stepped up their game,
with fantastic attack on the ball. The JETS applied constant
pressure on Goulburn when not in possession, with some great
tackles and spoils applied around the ground. When the JETS
had the ball, they used it well and gave the forwards every
opportunity to put goals on the board. In a good turnaround
from the terrible kicking for goal from the previous week,
the JETS added 4 goals to one in the final quarter to run
out 30 point winners and keep their hopes of a top two finish
well and truly alive.
GOALS:
Mace 8, C Burgess 2, Lee 1, Ingold 1
BEST: Lakes Dinner: G Mace; CyberBunker: J Mitchell; G-Spot:

Player: R Wheatley; CRP: B Lee
With
one round left before the finals, the JETS still need to chalk
up a win to secure the all important top two finish and double
chance. A great second half effort by the JETS will give them
a lot of encouragement going into the last round clash against
RMC on Sunday, go JETS!
