- Information for Members and Guests of the Gungahlin
JETS AFC.
The JETS have been part of the Amateur Australian Football
Competition in Canberra since 1982. Over that time the
club has won seven Premierships, and has grown to a club
with over 450 members, three Senior teams, including a women's team, six Junior
teams, and over 60 kids playing AUSKICK. The JETS have
been part of the Gungahlin Community since 1996 and
continue to grow in the region. The club's short-term
goal is to dominate the ACTAFL Canberra District Competition,
with an ultimate goal of entering teams in the ACTAFL's
Premier Competition. |

2000
- looked to be the year that the
JETS would stamp their authority on the competition. With the
re-appointment of Marc Housley as 1st grade coach, and Tim Hull
as 2nd Grade coach the JETS attracted a number of quality players
during the off-season.
The JETS started the season
strongly, and after leading the competition until the last round,
succumbed to an extensive injury list which included club captain
Troy MacKay to a serious knee injury. Although narrowly missing
the Minor Premiership, the JETS were confident of a good showing
in the finals. The JETS threw everything at Kingston in the 1st
Semi final which they eventually won by nine points. The second
semi against ADFA was equally as tough. Both teams scores were
level at full time, however a correction to the score saw ADFA
win by just two points. The "Magoos" started the season
extremely well, however lost a number of their key players to
a depleted 1st grade lineup and narrowly missed the finals again.
In the clubs closest ever Best and Fairest count, Adam Bloom won
the First Grade award, just beating Cam Nankervis, while the count
was even closer in 2nd Grade with Steve Baker beating David Simper
in the final round of votes. Greg Mace was awarded JET-of-the-Year
and Coaches award for his efforts both on and off the field, and
Leigh Kleinig was awarded Life Membership or his tireless commitment
to the club.

2001 -
saw us once again make the finals without reaching our ultimate
goal, a Premiership. It was a difficult year for the JETS who,
still coming to terms with the frustration of the previous season,
had lost several key players which made their task even tougher
for the 2001 season. A major turnover of players in the 1st grade
lineup tested our cohesion, however Marc Housley did a fantastic
job to get the JETS into the finals once again. Our run was ended
by ADFA in a hard-fought 1st Semi Final. The "Magoos",
under coach Leigh Kleinig had an indifferent season, playing with
vastly different lineup's each week due to a depleted 1st grade
side, and eventually finished the season in 5th position. Cam
Nankervis won the 1st Grade Best and Fairest, Chris Klose won
the same in 2nd Grade, Steve Baker won the JET-of-the-Year, and
in celebrating the club's 20-year history, Wayne Middleton, Geoff
Perrie, Robbie Barnes and Brett Langham were awarded Life Membership.
2002 -
was one of those years where the club had
to ask itself. "what might have been"? With most of
the players returning from the previous season, Marc Housley continuing
as Senior Coach and Michael Sinkowitsch taking over as the "Magoos"
coach, the club were looking to improve on their 4th placing in
2001. However, as the season commenced it was evident that the
club had not prepared well enough for the 2002 season and suffered
some heavy early losses. In contrast the "Magoos" were
holding their own and by the halfway mark of the season were well
entrenched in the top four. The 1sts began to gel as a team midway
through the season, and by finals time were easily beating teams
they would met in the finals. As the finals approached, the JETS
were rated the form team in the competition, however they came
crashing down at the hands of ANU in the last round and narrowly
missed a finals berth in both grades. The disappointing start
to the season had the cost the JETS dearly at the business end
of the season.
Dale Frankel took out the
1st Grade Best and Fairest award in his first year with the club,
Tim Hull won the award in 2nd grade, Andy Machin won JET-of-the-Year,
and Tim Hull completed the double by being awarded Life Membership
for his valuable contributions to the club, and retiring on a
winning note.
